SCARCE I S R A E L I, MID-20TH CENTURY, POST-WWII, ARTIST SIGNED, WHEEL-THROWN, SGRAFFITO I N CIS E D, HA N D DECORATED TERRACO T TA CLA Y F IG U RATI V E, BULBOUS FACED V ASE, fe aturi n g G I RL & OWL TOTEM in SEPIA BROW N wit h MULTI- C OLO RED GLAZE on INCISED, FL A T V A SE F A C I A & SIGNED on BASEPLATE in H E BR E W CALLIGRAPHIC SCRIPT. Ceramic vessel was pre-drilled on the lower back, opposite the flat, sgraffito incised facia of the vase, clearly intended to be used as the ceramic base for an electrified table lamp.

Mid-20th century, post-WWII I s r a e l i Modernist vintage wheel-thrown, sgraffito incised, figurative art pottery & ceramic lamp bases. 9 3/4" Height x 6 1/2" Width x 6 1/2 Depth. Signed by hand on baseplate in Hebrew cursive calligraphic script. Offered for your review and consideration is this utterly fantastic and simply stunning (shockingly beautiful actually) very scarce mid-20th century post WWII, I s r a e l i wheel-thrown and hand decorated terracotta ceramic bulbous art pottery vessel, featuring a cut, nearly flat facia, with sgraffito incised figuration of what appears to be a totem assemblage of the face of a young girl underneath the watchful gaze of a beaked owl.

The girl's exaggerated, slanted eyes are reminiscent of figuration seen in Egyptian bas-relief wall sculpture and that of sarcophagi found in archaic Egyptian tombs. The vase is wheel-thrown and its finger manipulated sidewalls are still readily visible. The bulbous form quickly turns upwards at the top of the shoulders and slightly expands as it rises, culminating in an abrupt, 90 degree vertical sidewall, cut pouring spout. The bottom baseplate of the vase is unglazed and features a signature in H e br e w script. Possibly made to be a lamp base with a pre-drilled hole for an electrical cord, near its lower base. Very fine and absolutely gorgeous. Very Good to Excellent overall vintage condition. This item is in the category "Pottery & Glass\Decorative Pottery & Glassware\Vases".
